About DVDC

The Diabetes Vaccine Development Centre (DVDC)...

  • is a joint initiative of the Australian Government, through the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF). 
  • was established to identify, evaluate, support and coordinate a range of projects as approved by its Board.  DVDC bridges the gap between fundamental research and full scale clinical product development. 
  • was launched in March, 2003 initially operating from within the School of Poplulation Health, The University of Melbourne and, from late 2007, from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Sydney.

The Garvan Institute of Medical Research, acts as the Sponsoring Administering Institution for the DVDC.
This relationship provides links to medical researchers and clinicians with shared interests in illness prevention, an awareness of key issues in translating research programs, and with direct interface between laboratory health science and the community.

Mission

The Diabetes Vaccine Development Centre's mission is,

"to accelerate the development of one or more vaccines that would prevent or delay the progress of early onset diabetes, aiming to have clinical proof of concept in 3-5 years, with studies conducted to a standard acceptable to regulatory agencies and to an eventual industrial partner."

Vision

The Diabetes Vaccine Development Centre will be recognised as the global leader for the translation of research into the development of immunotherapeutic approaches to prevent or delay the onset of Type 1 diabetes.

The Diabetes Vaccine Development Centre (DVDC) is a jointly supported initiative of
Australia's National Health and Medical Research Council and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International.
The DVDC is administered through The Garvan Institute of Medical Research

acting through the Department of State and Regional Development.
